Owned by the Leclérot family since September 2018, this vineyard, created in the 19th century, owes its composite name to two periods in its history. The Saracen invasions around 732 gave it its name of Villemaurine, town of the Moors, as there is said to have been an observation camp for the Moorish armies at this very spot in Saint-Émilion. Cardinal comes from the stay of Cardinal Gaillard de la Mothe – nephew of Bertrand de Goth, former archbishop of Bordeaux, who became Pope in 1305 under the name of Clement V – who, after tasting the wines, declared them the King of wines. Over the years, successive owners have contributed to the reputation and development of Château Cardinal Villemaurine.
A FAMILY STORY… Christine and Alain Leclérot, wine lovers, passed on their passion for wine to their youngest son Olivier. After specialising in wine, he was able to run the vineyard and manage the estate. Together, they set themselves a challenge: to restore the Château to its former glory. Modernisation of the technical facilities, restructuring of the vineyard, renovation of the reception areas – everything is in place to produce a great wine.
