Château Trottevieille is a 13-hectare wine estate located in Saint-Émilion in the Gironde. The vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soil, with 45% Cabernet Franc, 50% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and has been classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé since the 1st classification of Saint-Émilion wines in 1954.
Acquired by Marcel Borie after the Second World War, it is still owned by the Borie family and their Castéja descendants. Château Trottevieille is a very old estate whose name is said to have originated with an old lady who lived in the house several hundred years ago. Near the house was a stagecoach stop, and whenever a coach arrived, the old lady would trot down to catch up on the news: hence the name “TrotteVieille”. The house, a Carthusian monastery, is surrounded by a garden and the vineyard. In this superb vineyard nestling around the château, with its very old vines, there is still a parcel dating from before phylloxera. Château Trottevieille benefits from very good sunshine thanks to its exceptional exposure. Reddish earth covers the stone on which it rests with a very thin layer. The subsoil is made up of old quarries, and it’s not unusual to see the roots of the vines in the corridors of underground galleries located 10 to 20 metres below the surface. This shows just how hard the vines have to work to feed their grapes, but how long they have managed to survive in these very dry soils.
