The estate

In brief

Meyney is one of the oldest estates in the Médoc: wine has been made here for at least 350 years, since the Feuillants monks settled here in 1662. At the time, it was a priory belonging to the vast and noble House of Calon. It is clear that the vineyard was already concerned with quality, as the quality of the wine is mentioned in 1776, in the first wine census to be carried out in the Gironde, which places Meyney at the top of the list of vintages in the parish of Saint-Estèphe. After the French Revolution, the Feuillants order was dissolved and Meyney was sold at auction as national property to Mr Luetkens, a Bordeaux merchant and owner of Château La Tour Carnet in Saint-Laurent du Médoc. The new owner and his heirs understood the value of this terroir and continued to develop pioneering viticulture, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. This gift of nature was preserved by the Cordier family, who succeeded the Luetkens and bought Meyney in 1919. Owners of three crus classés, Châteaux Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Gruaud Larose and Talbot, the Cordiers were wine merchants, among the foremost in Bordeaux. At the end of 2004, the estate became part of the winegrowing assets of CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of Crédit Agricole. A development strategy was then put in place, involving investments in the vineyards to exploit the potential of this superb Saint-Estèphe cru.
