Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux
rouge • blanc • 6000 ha
The AOC Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux (formerly Premières Côtes de Blaye) exists in two colors: red and white. Gourmet, aromatic and fresh wines are produced, with a particularly expressive fruit.
The wines of Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux are recognized for their excellent quality / price / pleasure ratio. The terroir is the same for the various appellations of origin of Blayais. To the west, along the Gironde River, from Plassac to the north of Blaye, the soil of the steep hillsides bordering the river is clayey and chalky, while further north lies the marshland area, which is periodically subject to flooding, and whose silty soil is favorable to meadows and nurseries. In the hinterland, moving eastward, the rather uneven soil offers, in the canton of Saint-Savin, a series of high and wide plateaus reaching up to 100 meters in altitude. Separated by valleys with gentle slopes, both are covered with sandy-clay soil, sometimes sandy-gravelly as in the upper part of the canton of Saint-Ciers. More to the east and going north, one meets vast plateaus, kind of moors covered with an almost pure sand, which are only suitable for the culture of the maritime pine. The subsoil of the hillsides on which the AOC wines are produced is limestone, often very hard limestone, which is sometimes exposed on the surface and which is exploited either to produce rubble or limestone. Towards the east, the subsoil is often sandy. One even finds there quite frequently, as in the Médoc, a sandstone constituted by sand or gravel agglomerated by iron oxide, "alios".

About the wines
They generally have a beautiful color, a lot of fruit, suppleness and a pleasant bouquet. As they age, their color becomes "tiled", and on the nose, depending on the grape variety from which they are made, they develop musk or spice aromas.
Those benefiting from the Blaye appellation have slightly stricter production conditions than those benefiting from the Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux appellation.
The Merlot is the majority. It gives supple and fruity wines and can be associated with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc or Malbec.

About the wines
They are mainly produced in the cantons of Saint-Savin and Saint-Ciers. Depending on the grape varieties, they can be awarded one of the three AOCs of this region.
The white Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux are generally dry wines. They have a light, pale yellow color with a green tinge. Based on Sauvignon, they offer an intense and powerful nose, with aromas of broom, citrus and yellow fruits. On the palate, they are fine, lively, yet delicate and have a very pleasant lingering finish.
The wines of AOC Côtes de Blaye are also dry wines. Tender, fresh and pleasant wines, they are to be drunk with snacks, fried fish or as an aperitif while nibbling on some grey shrimps from the Gironde and winkles.
It is the Sauvignon Blanc that dominates. Its citrus aromas bring freshness and vivacity. The Sémillon and Muscadelle grapes can also be used in the composition of the white wines of the AOC Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux and contribute to their roundness.
